“SPÓJNIA” Hodowla i Nasiennictwo Ogrodnicze Spółka z o.o.  ("Spójnia" Plant Breeding and Seed Production Ltd.) seated  in Nochowo is a plant breeding  and seed production company with almost 100 years of tradition and owned  in 100% by the Agricultural Property Agency. We are primarily engaged in creative and conservative breeding of vegetable crops, seed production as well as packaging and sale of seeds of vegetables, flowers and herbs.

Our mission is to consistently implement quality-oriented  policies in an effort to achieve high quality products  and customer satisfaction as well as a good company image. Using our experience dating back to 1917 as well as  modern cutting-edge technologies and techniques of plant breeding, we strive to provide the highest quality products. The varieties we bred feature qualities searched by different groups of customers and are tailored to the climate and soil  conditions of Poland and the countries in our climate zone.

“Spójnia” is a single-branch company operating within the three contiguous towns: Nochowo, Kadzew and Międzychód. We operate based on the following organizational units: Breeding Department, Laboratory, Sales and Marketing Department, Economic Department and Administrative Department.

It is divided into  workshops of: legumes (peas, green beans and runner bean, broad bean, lentil, everlasting pea), cucurbits (pickling cucumber,  burpless cucumber, and other plants: dill, lettuce), root plants (red beet, carrot, parsley), bulbous and cruciferous plants (onions, chives, radish). Our main objective is to create varieties that will generate income for our Company. Such varieties are characterized by  a high yield of good quality, high health and the unique characteristics preferred by consumers. To meet this requirement we are looking for new forms for crossbreed,  for both heirloom  and heterotic varieties, we introduce resistance to fungal and bacterial diseases, through laboratory  tests we define the content of chemical compounds that shape product quality, enhance their usefulness for processing, help to improve human health, and are characterized by taste and  aesthetical qualities. Thanks to our plant breeding  experts, every year Spójnia  can offer its customers a lot of novelties.

In addition to traditional breeding, we also benefit from  the latest breeding technologies - such as in-vitro or molecular studies carried out in the Laboratory of Biotechnology. That is the place where it became possible to  shorten the  breeding works for such varieties as onion, cucumber, carrot and radish. The chemical laboratory made also enabled  more advanced  immune breeding of   vegetables such as: cucumber and beans. In addition it performs  chemical analysis,  develops new methods of vegetable seeds processing (parsley, carrot, onion) and  treatments that enhance germination and accelerate plant emergence (hydroconditioning). The Seed Assessment Laboratory examines  the quality of the seed material. It should be noted that our laboratory is authorized to issue  germination value certificates.

The Sales Department’s task consists in widely understood customer service and coordination of the entire process of selling seeds of vegetables, flowers and herbs. Our offer is addressed both to the amateur market and the market of producers and processors, while the main distribution channel for products manufactured by “Spójnia” comprise  wholesalers and large horticultural centers located all over the country. The Sales Department staff are always available to help in the selection of varieties and provide  information about the current commercial offer.

Before a product goes on sale, it  passes a series of processes that significantly improve its quality, including:

- seed encrusting - it consists in securing  the seed material to protect it against diseases

- calibrating - it consists in  subjecting the seeds to the process of grouping to fractions of specific size. It improves the quality of the seed to give a uniform and even material, which promotes better sprouting and definitely improves the condition of the plantation.

- hydroconditioning - popularly known as seed sprouting. Under controlled conditions (laboratory) the seeds  are subjected to soaking in aqueous solution, then rapidly dried and brought to a specific humidity. The hydroconditioning process speeds up and balances the sprouting, improves germination of seeds under drought conditions - therefore it  strongly improves the quality of seeds.

- conditioning  - involves the use of presowing fertilizer, which provides  plants with better conditions for the development from the very start. It increases the strength and energy of germination, accelerates plant growth by providing them with essential nutrients - macro- and micronutrients, allows for better root development and thus increases the resistance to poor humidity conditions. In other words, it increases the volume and quality of the crop.

To ensure that our products maintain  its high quality for a long time, we  keep them in optimal conditions - among other things, in refrigerated chambers, which provide optimal hygrothermal conditions and strongly affect the extension of the period during which the seed maintains the highest quality standards.

The Marketing Department has wide-ranging activities related to the promotion of the company and its products. The marketing  staff  prepare information and promotional materials such as leaflets, brochures, catalogs and all advertising materials to support promotional campaigns, such as  expositors or banner advertising. The marketing staff, along with the breeders,  are also involved in various kinds of fairs and exhibitions, and “Open Days” organized for producers and processors, where  on demo plots we  present individual varieties grown in  “Spójnia”. Usually such meetings are also accompanied by thematic lectures.

Plant production

Plant production includes the production of cereals and oilseed rape as well as  fodder for feeding cattle and sheep. Every year we grow about 300 hectares  of winter wheat for consumption with  high quality parameters  as well as some 70 hectares of oilseed rape and maize for animal feed and plants intended for green fodder  and silage.

Animal production

- cattle - in a cowshed for 100 animals we carry out production to breed dairy  HF cows. Average yield per cow ranges within 7,500 liters per year.

- sheep - merino sheep are crossbred with the Romanov sheep to enhance fertility and with a meat breed sheep in order to achieve better weight gain. A flock of sheep of 380 ewes, with a focus on breeding lambs intended for export to Italy - approximately  550 animals per year. Sheep reared in  “Spójnia” have the highest fertility rate in Poland, namely 171%.
